Hi - I want to record starting a couple of minutes _before_ the program starts. If I want to record based on the program name (independent of when the prog starts), then presumably I'll need to use %time% variables. But simply subtracting (say) 2 from the %minute% wouldn't work, I think, because then if the prog started at 6:00, recording would start at 6:58. Or am I wrong?

Take a look at PlayIn (and Playout) in dabdig.ini.

Note - however, that there is no intelligence applied to it - so you might then hav an issue with overlapping programmes (depends on the device you are using).
